Ummm…several teenage/ grown guys who are greater in both size and number are afraid of a midget in a gnome hat? Seriously, people. Might be creepy but could also be squashed like a bug.
This makes me interested in the history of popular gnome folklore. The little bearded man in the dunce cap is the quintessential modern gnome which in my mind goes back through the “Roaming Gnome” of Travelocity and the garden gnome to the Adventures of David the Gnome on Nickelodeon. I don’t have any recollection of this pointy-capped forest creature past that TV show.

Read the Gnome book. Goes back to the ’70s? at least.
