Volunteers hurt Unions

No, not the team. You know, the nice people that help out, for free. Because someone owes the Union workers a paycheck.

But Chief Teale argues volunteers can’t just volunteer whenever they want.

“It’s always been my dream to be a volunteer anchorman. And if you will just terminate your position, and allow me to do your job,” he told me.

But why shouldn’t he get to do that? Why shouldn’t ABC get to save the money?

“Absolutely not.” Teale said, “simply because — it’s a detriment to you, and your family.” He added, “There is no reason why you shouldn’t be entitled to your salary.”

Too bad for ABC.

I’m “entitled” to my salary? And volunteers should be stopped from volunteering?

Give me a break.

  1. More proof, as if any more were needed, that the unions have gone clear off the deep end.

  2. If only it were possible to destroy bureaucracies once their usefulness was over. We need to bind their power into a umm, a ring–yeah, that’s it–and then we could send an unassuming patsy to destroy it. This is great stuff, I should write this down.

  3. Wow. That’s a great idea! You should write a book!

Seriously, though, I think unions still have some valid purpose… but they have far more power than they need to fulfill it.

  4. I think unions have served their purpose and they should gracefully step aside. Yes, they did great things in the past. Now, however, they are in the way. And in today’s litigious society and with our busybody Congress and everyone sooo concious of all their “rights” I doubt an employer could get away with mistreating their employees on a grand scale for long. Plus, if a problem developed, I’m sure a solution would develop right along with it. And the solution would be in tune with the times, not relying on the glory of 100 years ago.

Or course, maybe I’m just jealous I don’t have a union getting me the big bucks.

  5. My major problem with unions is that you can be forced to join one. Unions, then, don’t have to deal with any sort of market or competition… Of course, you make a very good point about the litigiousness of our society.
