What?

Jobs lost, blah, blah blah. But what does this quote mean?

“When we discuss job reductions, we are talking about positions not necessarily people,” said Marc Oken, transition executive for Bank of America.

So they have a lot of jobs that aren’t actually being done by people that they are going to get rid of?

  1. At a company like that atrition happens both regularly and frequently… when someone leaves, they just won’t hire a replacement. Moreover, some folks who are near retirement can be bought into retirement instead of just being let go.

Of course, two-thirds of those are still going to be firings/lay-offs, but we’re talking about a merger, not a hit in revenue, causing the action.

  2. Yeah, it’s just the way they put it. I love officespeak.

  3. Example: 3 people doing 3 jobs. You fire one guy and then tell the other 2 to do half of that dude’s job or they’ll get canned. Fear/motivation makes up for the lost job, which increases productivity and big $$ for management, while low level workers are doing all kinds of work and not getting much other than not-fired.
