Mmm, malaria

Why did Fanta make a Quinine Water flavored drink? Did they think the malaria-conscious consumer was a big, untapped market?

  1. Fanta started as a Dutch company making soft drinks in Europe, and is now a part of the Coke empire. Fanta has a large share of the world market with heavy presence in Europe and Africa, where Tonic (the common name for Quinnie Water) is not only a popular pair with gin, but also a good source of nutritious water.

As a side note, you probably know that gin & tonic is said to have originated among British troops in Africa who needed a way to make the tang of Quinnie Water go down a bit easy, with the small lime slice a way to avoid scurvy as well and make a limited lime supply go even further. This might be myth, but it goes with your main topic, sorta.

  2. I had no idea.
