If I didn’t go to a Calvary Chapel I’d probably end up being a Southern Baptist. We disagree on a couple minor points, but at least they stand for something.
The December report complained that some in the alliance had questioned “the truthfulness of Holy Scripture,” refused to affirm the necessity of conscious faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, promoted women preachers, criticized the SBC and its foreign mission board and adopted an “anti-American” tone.
It sounds like they appose coming out of the dark ages.
By the way the third reich stood for something.
Godwined in one comment!
I simply made a statement I didn’t consider it an argument.
It’s cool. But it is generally considered bad form to do that in discussions. Maybe something more like “Nixon stood for something” or “the Soviet Union stood for something”.
Southern Baptists are something else, Kristin, and the vast majority of them around here (that speak often of their faith) are ignorant, racist, and just downright absurd.
Not to say that they’re all like that, of course.
You aren’t the first person in the South to tell me that. The more I talk to people in the South, the more it seems that churches are different down there. I think I’ll stay out west.
Hey now. I’m “Southern Baptist” (except, you can’t FIND one up here) … and, I’m all progressive, and stuff. Oh, and I don’t believe that I’m racist. I also don’t demean my wife, I consider her an equal in our marriage … she’s puts up with crap from me, and I from her, and we look beyond that into what is all positive and peachy, and thank God for having married our respective “Jobs” of eternal patience toward each other’s failings.
I don’t condemn people to Hell, nor go off on a tyrade whenever I walk past a bar filled with patrons. I don’t blow up abortion clinics, snipe at abortion providers, but neither do I condone any and all of this behavior.
I believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, and that Salvation is found only through the person and diety of Jesus the Christ.
If all of that makes me so bad in the eyes of Kirk and Pete, sobeit. I’ll live, as I’m sure they will.
Ah, but I ramble.
Yeah, all the Southern Baptists I’ve met have been more like you than not. Apparently, based on the hearsay I’ve heard from various people, that is not necessarily the norm throughout the country. I’d still probably end up a baptist though.
I’m from “the south” in terms of Southern Baptists. Grew up in Houston, lived in Georgia. You don’t get much more “Southern Baptist” than Georgia, eh?
Tony, would you be fine with your wife becoming a preacher in the church you go to?
Georgia is south, I cannot argue with that. (Do you have the cool accent?) One for the plus column. And to clarify, I’d probably still end up a baptist.
A Texan accent, when I want to show it. Mostly, I work not to have the accent, but it doesn’t always work out that way …
Oh, and I don’t answer anonymous questions …. except to say that my wife believes exactly like as I do. She did before we ever got married. Hey, that’s probably why there’s not theological “arguments” in our household, huh? There’s a novel concept.
Tony, with all due respect I didn’t ask what your wife believed I wanted a simple answer to my question. I don’t know why my E-mail and name didn’t go thru I was not trying to be anonymous.
