Sadly I think the change in “Phil: The Monster Who Sometimes Likes to Eat a Cookie” may spell the eventual end of sesame street. Once you start playing the Politacally Correct game, it never ends. Sad.
It’s very sad. A mean-spirited politbureau has decided that all things need to be remade in their image… let the children be children. Don’t make the Monster go on a low-fat, low-carb diet, and don’t make him gay. The latter in particular is not pertinent to his character (in the same way it truly wasn’t relevant to Bert & Ernie, but they’ve already been outed). What was pertinent about Bert & Erine was that they are good friends who helped one another and found ways to resolve any difficulties they encountered. Their being gay is a modern trapping, a distraction to the original modus operandi of the characters. Cookie Monster is lovable, and he eats cookies (who cares what the fat content of those cookies are! It’s fun! Kids need to have fun, and eating cookies is fun!) Where does sexual orientation come into this? And why do we need to steal childhood from our children by forcing them to deal with sex at that early an age? Mind you, it’s a wonderful part of being human (our sexuality), but IT DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENRICHMENT OF A CHILD’S LIFE. They need to play, they need to learn to socialize, they need to learn organization, discipline, respect for others, they need to feel safe… THIS helps them adjust to whatever curveballs the growth process throws them. Sexual matters, IMnon-humbleO, can come closer to the time that horomones begin to do their work. A five-year-old who has learned respect for others does not need to be taught about what it means to be straight or gay in order to socialize with their peers or deal with strangers.

Had to let that one out of me. This topic really pisses me off.
