Interesting idea, but

I’m no ecologist or oceanographer, but wouldn’t sucking all that cold water off the bottom of the ocean on a large scale change the overall temperature of the ocean, thereby contributing to whatever ecological disasters warmer oceans cause?

  1. are we SURE we aren’t twins? That’s EXACTLY what I thought when I read that article this morning.

  2. Seems to me like this would lower the average ocean temperature.

Seems to me that if he’s using the heat of the ocean water (and difference in heat) and nothing else, then somewhere along the way there’s energy being pulled out of that water… which will necessitate a loss in heat.

That will, I’d imagine, be offset by the sun pumping heat into the ocean.

I’m not a scientist, but I play one on the internet.

  3. I sorta see what you are saying Pete, but either way it seems like this will be disrupting the balance of ocean water temperatures.

Maybe the oceans are big enough to handle the impact, maybe water cools fast enough for it to be irrelevant (which my vague memories of high school oceanography causes me to doubt. Something about thermocline layers), but inquiring minds want to know.
