Surveys of undergraduates like “Your First College Year,” conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles and the Policy Center on the First Year of College at Brevard College, show troublingly high levels of “academic disengagement.” Students say that they feel bored in class, submit assignments that underexercise their talents, and do minimal homework.
