There’s a chance the new superconductor could create a black hole that won’t decay, thereby killing us all.
I really like how colorful the superconductor is in the picture. Very nice.

Not to 50!
That looks awesome. I dig it.
Until we are ripped apart molecule by molecule by it. Then the colorful colors won’t seem as fun, more like a ploy to lull our suspicions.
Hopefully a crack team of plucky outsiders will be able to band together to stop it before it destroys Switzerland only losing two of their team members, but the ones we didn’t really care about anyway.
What then really need in addition to the colorful colors are posters of puppies and kittens. How could something be dangerous with those?
You should call them and suggest that.
Uhhh…. Yha you keep thinking that…
The super colliders couldnt create something powerful enough to destroy the earth! And even if we did create soemthing like that the chances would be so small it would be like winning the lotto 10 times in a row and being ran over a train while being struck by lightning 10 times. And if thats the case then we wouldnt have many life forms left in the universe, that my end the world..
I don’t believe it.
Well, we’ll see what happens.
/of course it’s not going to. If I thought it was wouldn’t I be doing something to stop it rather than joking about it?
(forgive my spelling Im way too tired right now.)
this artical was probably made by someone who thinks the idea was stupid so they sent out an artical without all the facts so that the general population thinks its a bad idea. (tell the truth of those looking at this, do you know the math behind it) obviously the fact that this is up there means that someone is smart enough to know that most people believe everything they read… next thing you know there will be death cults centering around the time they turn this thing on.
So from someone who does have some idea about particle acelerators, they wouldn’t be doing this if they actually thought it would destroy the entire universe. The energy involved with accelerating particles to a millionth of a percent of the speed of light is immense and there will definitely be unknowns involved (which is the reason they do this stuff so they can try and figure out the knowns). I believe the thought is that the 10 to 1000 of teravolts collisions will be able to produce conditions that were similar to those of the big bang, which could produce black holes (although I am not sure how). That being said, the scale of this is still significantly smaller than that of the big bang itself. I have a feeling the writer of the article didn’t like that there were unknowns involved with such high energies… but what do I know? Maybe there is a risk and we will all die …
Oh and I liked this: “CERN software developer Ran Livneh has expressed some concerns about the project.” Now obviously software developers are important and have complicated jobs, but I think I would rather get my reflections of the LHC possibilities from one of the scientists. No one else at CERN seems too concerned.
