I'm scared

Is it me or is it the industry? I’m just not excited by upcoming technology anymore. HD-DVD, BluRay, Vista, Core Duo, VoiP, video on demand, it just doesn’t thrill me like, DVDs or XP or 1Ghz processors did. Playstation 3, Xbox 360, I am completely unwilling to pay that kind of money to play games. I admit the Wii got my attention, but I didn’t rush out and buy one. I’m perfectly happy with my computer and feel no compulsion to upgrade it. Will I continue to become more apathetic to new and improved technology as life goes on? Will I end up with a dozen cats and a computer that blinks 12:00?

The horror.

  1. heh…kristin, the crazy cat lady. has a nice ring to it.

  2. you’re just jealous.

I bare my angst-ridden soul and you call me names :`(

  3. I am still looking forward to Betamax.

I just wished all these cool new tech-things waited till there were standards before they made a big deal about that. Why would I spend $1000 for a BluRay player when it might not even be the standard in a year. At least DVDs stuck around. Look at wireless standards: b was great, then g came out and the next standard and was great, now they have “pre-n” and “draft-n” and we are supposed to get excited about it and spend loads of money for it?

It seems advertising and, shockingly, money grubbing has gotten ahead of the actual technology. I don’t like that. Not one bit.

  4. if you get one of those new iphones, you’ll be cool and not a crazy cat lady. i’m just helping out.

  5. Can I borrow SIX HUNDRED dollars and the monthly plan money for the 10 calls I get a month?

  6. Matt – I don’t really have a problem with letting the market sort out the vagaries of conflicting standards. (I’m not about to buy HD or blu-ray before there is a clear winner and/or dual standard players. I still won’t feel compelled to update my paltry video collection though.)

I just don’t see the big breakthroughs that used to excite me. My computer is fast enough for me, my mp3 player holds enough, my TV is big enough, my internet is fast enough. I am still waiting on my jetpack, and immersive 3d gaming, but that’s it.

  7. But do you think you will be happy with any advancement in technology that doesn’t provide a jetpack?

I do personally think that HD is a pretty cool advancement and, at least the TVs, are getting fairly close to standard… but still nowhere near affordable to me!

  8. My son bought his own Wii a few days after Christmas. If I had had that much money as a high school senior, I would have spent it on cocaine. New gadgets are a good place to put extra money.

  9. One day I will have extra money! One of these days…. 🙂

  10. For the cocaine or the Wii?

So I just looked at the iPhone. I drooled a little bit. That IS an amazing piece of technology. Even if I will never have the money for it, I dig it.

  11. Cat food, apparently.

  12. What’s so bad about having 12 cats? Playing games on the computer while your cats are sleeping is a favorite pastime, apparently. Of course, I wouldn’t know.
