The Library of Congress has acknowledged that there are legitimate reasons to bypass some encryption schemes, loosening the DMCA’s unreasonably strict rules.
So, feel free to jailbreak your iPhone, copy small portions of DVDs for non-commercial purposes and crack your ebooks so you can listen to them read aloud and not worry about the FBI knocking on your door. You know, like they did when you tore the tags off your mattresses and copied VHS tapes.
Also, a federal judge has ruled that it is okay to crack DRM for Fair Use. I expect this to be overturned.
But, here’s hoping things keep loosening up.
